To wash gym clothes so they don't smell: let them dry before they hit the hamper, turn them inside out, wash in cold water with the normal amount of detergent, skip fabric softener, and air dry or tumble dry low. For clothes that already smell, soak them in cold water with white vinegar for about 30 minutes before washing.

Most gym clothes start to smell for one simple reason: sweat and bacteria get trapped in the fabric and never fully wash out. The fix is a routine, not a miracle product. Here's the full routine, start to finish.

Why gym clothes smell even after washing

Sweat itself doesn't smell much. The odour comes from bacteria breaking it down, and damp fabric is the perfect place for that to happen. Three habits make it worse:

  • Leaving sweaty clothes balled up in a gym bag or hamper, where they stay damp for hours.
  • Using too much detergent, which leaves residue in the fabric that holds onto odour.
  • Using fabric softener, which coats the fibres and can trap smells inside.

Fix those three and most of the problem goes away.

Step-by-step: how to wash gym clothes

1. Air them out right after training

This is the step most people skip, and it matters most. When you get home, take your clothes out of your bag and hang them up somewhere they can dry. A damp shirt sitting in a closed bag overnight is how the smell sets in.

If you train at lunch and won't be home for hours, a mesh pocket or separate breathable bag helps.

2. Turn everything inside out

The sweat and skin contact are on the inside of the fabric, so that's the side that needs the most cleaning. It also protects prints and graphics from rubbing against other clothes in the drum.

3. Don't overload the machine

Clothes need room to move through the water. A packed drum means detergent and water can't reach every part of the fabric. Wash a smaller load or run two.

4. Wash cold, with the right amount of detergent

Use cold water and a normal or gentle cycle. Heat is hard on cotton (it can shrink) and on printed graphics. Use the amount of detergent the label recommends. More is not better.

5. Skip the fabric softener

Leave it out entirely for gym clothes. It coats fibres and can hold onto odour.

6. Dry low or hang dry

Air drying is gentlest on fabric and prints. If you use a dryer, choose low heat. High heat is the fastest way to shrink a fitted cotton tee or crack a graphic.

How to get the smell out of gym clothes that already stink

If a shirt still smells right out of the wash, the odour is built up in the fabric. Try a pre-soak:

  1. Fill a sink or bucket with cold water and add about a cup of white vinegar.
  2. Submerge the clothes and let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Wash as normal (cold, normal detergent, no softener).
  4. Air dry, and smell-test before putting it away.

Short on time? Add about a cup of white vinegar to the wash along with your detergent. If a piece still smells after a couple of rounds, the odour may be too built-up to remove, and it might be time to retire it.

Quick reference: care by garment

Garment Wash Dry Notes
Fitted cotton tee Cold, inside out Hang or tumble low Cotton can shrink slightly with heat
Heavyweight boxy tee Cold, inside out Hang or tumble low Hang to keep the drape and shape
Heavyweight hoodie Cold, inside out, gentle Tumble low or lay flat Wash separately from items with zips or hooks
Synthetic shorts and leggings Cold, gentle Hang dry Heat can damage stretch fibres

Cotton vs synthetic: which smells less?

It depends on the fabric and how you care for it. Synthetic performance fabrics dry fast and wick sweat, but some people find they hold onto odour over time. Cotton is breathable and soft, and it washes well, but it takes longer to dry, which is why hanging it up after training matters so much.

Most Gains Protocol tees are cotton: fitted Next Level 3600 tees and heavyweight Cotton Heritage MC1087 box tees. Treat them with the routine above and they'll stay fresh and keep their shape. Not sure which cut is right for you? Read Boxy vs. Fitted Gym Shirts.

How to keep your printed gym shirts looking new

A graphic tee lives a lot longer with a few extra habits:

  • Always wash inside out.
  • Never iron directly on the print. If you need to iron, turn it inside out or put a cloth over the graphic.
  • Avoid high heat in the wash and dryer.
  • Don't use bleach on printed or coloured garments.

Simple habits that prevent the smell

  • Keep a separate laundry bag for gym clothes so they don't sit pressed against other dirty laundry.
  • Don't re-wear a sweaty shirt for a second session.
  • Wash within a day or two of training rather than letting gym clothes pile up for a week.
  • Rotate your kit. Owning a few tees and a hoodie means nothing gets worn into the ground. Here's how to choose the best hoodie for the gym.

The bottom line

Gym clothes smell when they stay damp and when residue builds up in the fabric. Hang them to dry after training, wash inside out in cold water with normal detergent, skip the softener, dry low, and use a vinegar soak when something's already funky. That's the whole routine.

Frequently asked

Why do my gym clothes still smell after washing?

Usually because they sat damp before washing, or because too much detergent or fabric softener left residue in the fabric that holds onto odour. Hang them to dry after training and skip the softener.

Should I wash gym clothes in hot or cold water?

Cold. It's gentler on cotton, which can shrink with heat, and on printed graphics.

Does vinegar get the smell out of gym clothes?

A pre-soak in cold water with about a cup of white vinegar for at least 30 minutes, followed by a normal wash, is a common fix for built-up odour.

Can I put gym clothes in the dryer?

Yes, on low heat. Air drying is gentlest. High heat can shrink cotton tees and crack prints.
